South Australia is known as The Festival State, but COVID-19 had an enormous impact on our calendar of events in 2020.
We are incredibly fortunate that many of our regular festivals and events are poised to return in 2021.
South Australians are spoiled for choice during the first half of the year, with a multitude of ways to spend our money in our own backyard and help support the ailing arts.
The first six months of the year includes the following iconic events.
The Adelaide Fringe has just wrapped up for 2021. It was quite a different event this year, with 80% of registered events being performed by local artists. In many ways it was a welcome return to the earlier days of the Adelaide Fringe Festival and an opportunity to discover grassroots and up-and-coming artists.
The Adelaide Festival was similarly impacted, with cancellations of several planned international performances. Despite the challenges, the Adelaide Festival once again showed that Adelaide is at the forefront of the cultural arts.
Adelaide Writers’ Week hosted many international writers by livestreaming them to the local audience, while local Australian writers benefited from the opportunity to step into the spotlight at face-to-face events.
WOMAdelaide has announced substantial changes to its format, with a new location and one stage instead of its usual multi-stage offer. The line-up is as impressive as always, with a renewed focus on Australian performers.
After being cancelled in 2020 and with the advantage of falling later in the year compared to other local arts festivals, the Adelaide Cabaret Festival is back with a vengeance, boasting an impressive line-up of local and international performers.
Each of these festivals is strictly adhering to local COVID-19 requirements and is focused on delivering a fun and safe experience for its audiences.
